How to watch early-season college hoops

Jeff Fogle writes . . .

Tonight’s NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals in New York are a reminder of the great college basketball “connectivity” handicappers can use to their advantage.

Those matchups (ESPN2, 5 and 7:30 p.m. ET) are #5 Tennessee of the SEC vs. Louisville of the ACC, and #2 Kansas of the Big 12 vs. Marquette of the Big East.

As Jeff points out, whether it’s the NIT or the Maui Invitational, these neutral-court showcases are ideal for evaluating tournament potential. Read on to get the questions to ask yourself during the NIT.

Phil vs. Tiger: Let there be hype

VSiN’s Matt Youmans weighs in on the matchup with Brent on My Guys in the Desert. Matt already has made his bet.

"In the last three days, I might have seen one ticket." SuperBook’s Jeff Sherman says the public betting interest in the Tiger/Phil exhibition is non-existent.

ESPN’s Bob Harig reports on the press conference to promote the event, which will include a $200,000 side bet on the first hole.

Wes Reynolds handicaps the match in this week’s Point Spread Weekly, out later today.

Seen & Heard on VSiN

From Follow The Money: Jeff Sherman says the opening total on a Chiefs-Rams rematch would be in the low 70s.

Former NFL executive and VSiN co-host joined Gill Alexander on A Numbers Game to recap the thriller between the Chiefs and the Rams while also sharing his insights on the importance of clock management and offensive pacing.

Also from A Numbers Game: Pete Fiutak of breaks down Michigan-Ohio State and the Iron Bowl.

Finally . . .

An innocent enough question posed by Brent to Youmans ended up with a description of nude beaches in Hawaii.

The crew is working hard on a Thanksgiving week issue that will be emailed out by 10 a.m. Pacific.

PSW editor Steve Makinen offers a preview . . .
In my college football feature, I take a look at all of the big rivalry games from a historical and stakes perspective. At this point in the season, it is often the difference in two teams’ will or motivation that can decide who wins or loses. It’s not just the better teams that win these games, as knocking a rival off can be the fuel that gets even the biggest underdog’s fire lit. Not to be outdone, Matt Youmans also contributes his thoughts on some of the biggest weekend college games as well.

In the pros, I have put together what I believe to be a very valuable piece for you, detailing the performance records of each of the NFL head coaches in games played on Thanksgiving Day and later. This is always a critical time of the year in the NFL, and how coaches adjust to adversity or how they prepare their teams for late season success can have a huge impact on the postseason picture. You might be surprised at some of what I have uncovered in this study.
