YOUR WEALTH
Editor’s Note
The rules for claiming Social Security retirement benefits have become so complicated that it’s practically impossible for mere mortals to navigate the system intelligently. Sadly, Social Security’s complexity are keeping many people — especially couples — from getting the most out of the benefits they earned.

The key is to start doing your research well in advance of when you actually need to make those claiming decisions. While there are many helpful resources and online calculators to tap, make sure you select a reputable source and one that will answer your specific questions. I would recommend seeking advice from a financial expert. To that point, many advisory firms now include Social Security claiming strategies among their financial planning benefits for clients.

Once you’ve done your research and settled on a claiming strategy, consult with the Social Security Administration, experts say. Beware: Many of the options you choose may be irrevocable. You basically have one chance to get it right, so make it count.
