What To Make of the AFC

Let’s be nice and call it parity, but the AFC is severely lacking top-end teams at this point in time. It is shaping up to be a good race to the finish, even if all the contestants are running on sprained ankles. Let’s survey some of the top teams and see what’s happening. (odds to win the AFC from BetMGM)

Tennessee Titans (+500)
The Titans survived against the Saints to improve to 8-2 and have two more wins than any other team in the conference with two games left against the Texans and one home date with the Jaguars. While Tennessee deserves a ton of credit for the success thus far, the Titans had 3.5 yards per play last week against the Rams and 4.6 yards per play against the Saints. This offense misses Derrick Henry. Julio Jones is on IR and AJ Brown was hurt again in the win. He came back and finished the game, but he’s still not 100%.

Buffalo Bills (+225)
The Bills manhandled the Jets to finally look like the team we expected to see over the last three weeks, but the poor performance against Miami, coupled with last week’s loss to Jacksonville, has left us questioning how good this team really is. The Bills have a win over the Chiefs, but the other teams they’ve beaten all have three or fewer wins.

New England Patriots (+1200)
Some wondered if the Patriots are now the best team in the AFC after their beatdown of the Browns. The offensive line owned the game, Bill Belichick owned Kevin Stefanski and Mac Jones was slinging more dimes than a teller at the horsetrack. New England visits Atlanta on Thursday and can put some pressure on the Bills with a win to increase the winning streak to five.

AFC North
Might as well group these teams together. The Browns (+2000) are in the basement at 5-5, as Cincinnati (+2500) was idle, Pittsburgh (+2000) tied with Detroit and Baltimore (+550) spent Sunday licking some wounds after the loss to the Dolphins. The head-to-head games are going to decide this division. The Browns should get back on track with the Lions next week, but the Bengals and Steelers head west to face the Raiders and Chargers, respectively. Pittsburgh may be without Ben Roethlisberger again, as he tested positive for COVID on Saturday. That may open the door for Baltimore to widen the gap as a road favorite against Chicago.

AFC West
These four teams can be grouped as well. Three of them have five wins and one has six. That was the head-to-head winner in last night’s Chiefs-Raiders game, in which Kansas City (+550) rolled Las Vegas (+4000). Every AFC team is clearly flawed in some way and this division personifies that. The Broncos (+4000) lost in ugly fashion at home to the Eagles and the Chargers (+900) once again played below their talent level against the Vikings.

With the inconsistency shown by all of these teams, betting on any of them is hard to do as we start surveying the next week of games.
