A few final thoughts before the tournament tips off:

Be mindful of public influence: Throughout the season, most games are not impacted by public betting at all. March Madness is the exception. People that have not followed any of these teams are getting down on these games just because they can and there is a lot more volume on these games than a typical college basketball game. I’m not telling you to fade the public. I’m telling you to take a closer look at games where the public sentiment goes one way and the line either goes the other way or doesn’t move at all.

For example, everybody seems to like South Dakota State over Providence. That line hasn’t moved much from -2. The Friars may not win because that’s basically a 53/47 type of game, but the lack of movement is telling. On the other hand, public and sharp bettors seem to be taking a liking to Vermont, as that line opened 6 and has inched down to as low as 4.5. If that line came back up on Arkansas, we can reasonably assume that somebody with influence hit the Razorbacks. Watch for those cues.

You don’t have to bet every game before it starts: Live betting can be your friend in the NCAA tournament. Some games will start fast, with great shooting numbers that will prove to be unsustainable. Some games will start slow with nerves or missed shots. There are jitters at the beginning and the end. In between, players will settle in.

The higher variance level of non-conference play and teams with bigger talent discrepancies and strengths of schedule should create some in-game opportunities. Foul trouble will matter a lot as well. Some teams have very thin margins for error. If a star guard or a key big man has to sit out a while, it could hurt a lot.

If you do decide to live bet some games, make sure you’re following closely. Games are running simultaneously throughout the day and you’ll want to watch all of them. If you’re distracted, you may miss something, so be careful getting too caught up in live wagering if your focus is elsewhere.

Tomorrow is another day: We still have lots of NCAA tournament, NIT, CBI and Basketball Classic. Don’t bet over your means and have to reload or get overextended on one game, where anything can happen. Strike when you feel you have an edge, but maintain proper bankroll management techniques and discipline.
