Burke’s Betting Blurbs

Early Elite Eight Saturday Thoughts

We know two of the four Elite Eight matchups, so I’ll take an early look at those as we wait to find out who else will be joining the party this weekend.

Houston (-2.5, 128.5) vs. Villanova: There are always bones to pick with the Selection Committee. Turning Houston into a No. 5 seed seems to be this year’s biggest. The Cougars were a metrics darling all season long, ranked in the top-five for the majority of the year at both KenPom and Bart Torvik’s websites. Yet, somehow, they were barely deemed worthy of being ranked as one of the top 20 teams in the NCAA tournament.

Kelvin Sampson coached an absolute clinic against Tommy Lloyd and Arizona. Kerr Kriisa was a giant liability again and the rookie head coach didn’t have the wherewithal to bench him, but that wasn’t all. Houston out-toughed and outclassed Arizona in the major areas of the game.

Now Houston draws Villanova in a matchup of arguably the two best coaches in college basketball. This game will be a slog. It will be a war. It will be a very popular under bet. The spread may simply come down to how Villanova shoots from 3 because getting inside will be a struggle. Collin Gillespie is also less than 100%. Houston has shined against a much stronger path in the NCAA tournament. My initial thought is to look at Houston here, but the under also makes a ton of sense.

Arkansas vs. Duke (-4, 147): Gonzaga missed a lot of open looks early and Chet Holmgren got into foul trouble with a soft whistle. In the end, Arkansas did something only one other team did this season and that was hold the Bulldogs to under .900 points per possession. It will take a similar defensive effort against a Duke team that has managed to turn it on at just the right time in each of the last two games.

Duke has looked largely pedestrian for 35 minutes against Michigan State and Texas Tech, but has flipped the switch late and advanced. Duke’s main defensive weakness lies on the perimeter, where Arkansas shoots a very low percentage, hitting under 31% on 3s and only 35% on long 2s. Duke’s offense is shooting 60.5% on 2s in this tournament so far. The defense is the worry, but Arkansas is not a good offensive team. The Blue Devils match up pretty well here. Eric Musselman should have the coaching edge, but my initial thought is to favor the Duke side.
