Masters Update & Continued Coverage

Are we going to get some drama or will Scottie Scheffler continue to run away from the field at Augusta National? Scheffler navigated a very windy day at The Masters to shoot a 67, two shots better than his opening-round 69, to open up a FIVE-SHOT lead at 8-under over reigning champion Hideki Matsuyama, Shane Lowry, Sungjae Im and 2011 Masters champ Charl Schwartzel. There is also a five-way tie for sixth at 2-under.

Will he come back to the pack? Will somebody from the pack rise up to meet him? We’ll have to wait and see.

For some tips on some potential in-tournament wagers, here’s our post-cut content and updates:

  • Wes Reynolds: A recap after the second round and best bets heading into the weekend. READ MORE
  • Wes & Brady Kannon: Our Long Shots crew did a podcast after Friday’s action to talk about what we’ve seen so far and what to expect for the weekend. LISTEN HERE

We’ll have continuing coverage all day long on VSiN, plus Wes co-hosts Betting Across America from 12-3 p.m. ET and Brady co-hosts VSiN BetCenter from 6-10 p.m. ET.

MLB Day 3 – Picks, Betting Tools and Analysis

We had lots of runs and lots of early-season excitement on Friday. Benches cleared following more bean balls in Queens, as the Mets and Nationals exchanged pleasantries after Francisco Lindor was hit in the face by a pitch (x-rays and a concussion test were negative). The Blue Jays erased a 7-0 deficit to best the Rangers 10-8 in a wild and crazy game. We saw walk-offs with the Yankees over the Red Sox and the Tigers over the White Sox, both in come-from-behind fashion. The White Sox also lost more than the game, as starter Lucas Giolito left hurt with side tightness.

Betting Strikeout Props

Bettors are always looking for an edge wherever they can find it. Many have tried to find edges with starting pitcher strikeout props. You see a lot of these nowadays and they can be profitable if you find the right situations. Right now, they are tough because starting pitchers aren’t stretched out, which could lead to some value on the under. For the most part, though, bettors are looking to go over the posted total.

Here are a couple quick tips for betting strikeout props:

Analyze the projected lineup: As a general rule, pitchers have more success striking out “same-side hitters”, so right-handed pitchers strike out more right-handed batters and left-handed pitchers strike out more left-handed batters. The league-wide K% last season was 23.2%. With R vs. R matchups, it was 24.1%. With L vs. L matchups, it was 24.7%. With R vs. L matchups, it was 22.6%. With L vs. R matchups, it was 21.9%.

The data absolutely backs it up, so you want to try and find matchups where a right-handed pitcher will face a right-handed-heavy lineup and a left-handed pitcher will face a lot of lefties.

Look at the “Plate Discipline” stats: These are from 2021, but you can find them at FanGraphs here. Sort by the column headers. O-Swing% means swinging at pitches outside of the strike zone. Which teams are undisciplined and chase a lot? Z-Contact% is percentage of pitches that teams make contact with inside the strike zone. SwStr% is the teams rate of swings and misses relative to total swings.

Some teams are more aggressive, so if they’re facing a pitcher that gets lots of swings and misses, that should continue. Some teams are less aggressive, chase less and make a lot more contact. Those teams will likely not strike out as much.

You have to use matchup-based analysis when it comes to strikeout props. They can be very lucrative, but you’ll also have to do your homework because they are fairly easy lines to set, so you’ll need to find a well-defined edge.
