NBA Playoffs Continue Tonight

The Brooklyn Nets have officially advanced to the NBA Playoffs and will be the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference. They bested the Cavaliers 115-108 and now the Cavs will wait for the result of the Hornets vs. Hawks game to see which team they will host on Friday in a win or go home battle for the No. 8 seed. The Nets are a +100 underdog for their series vs. the Celtics (-120 at DraftKings Sportsbook).

In the Western Conference, the Timberwolves and Clippers played a barnburner, but it is Minnesota that will be the No. 7 seed. Los Angeles now awaits the winner of the Spurs vs. Pelicans game to see what Friday’s pressure-cooker matchup will be. The Timberwolves opened at +240 in the series matchup vs. the Grizzlies (-300).

Here are where the lines stand for today’s two games:

Eastern Conference
10E Hornets at 9E Hawks (-5, 236) – 7 p.m. ET

Check out JVT’s thoughts on Hornets vs. Hawks HERE.

Western Conference
10W Spurs at 9W Pelicans (-5.5, 226) – 9:30 p.m. ET

JVT also shared his opinions on Spurs vs. Pelicans HERE.

Burke’s Betting Blurbs

The Right Headspace is Essential When Handicapping

I’ve been very fortunate to be creating content in this business for over a decade, but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t some days where it can be a real challenge. This is a relentless, 365-day industry if you handicap across all sports and it can wear you down, much like a lot of other things in life. It’s my day job, so I can only imagine what others may go through to handicap the card with a different occupation and the different stresses that are associated with those gigs.

If you aren’t in a good headspace, you won’t have good betting results. A distracted mind is a bad thing for a bankroll and firing off bets for the sake of finding that little dopamine rush or that little bit of adrenaline can get you into a lot of trouble. If you’re arguing with your significant other, don’t rush to handicap the card as a means of getting away from it. Clear up the argument before you cap. If you’re stressed about work, compartmentalize and resolve before going to dig into the games. Don’t just rely on betting as a crutch to occupy your mind and make you forget about something else going on. That can be a slippery slope in so many ways.

If you’re having a tough day mentally, bad results can make it worse. Good results will be a temporary elixir, but you can go in the other direction as well. We all want to win for a variety of reasons, money and validation among the biggest. Some people may use betting or sports as an escape. Others like the mental challenge in hopes of staying sharp. Others, especially those that played sports and no longer really participate, really gravitate towards the competitive aspect of it.

Have a clear understanding of why you are betting and the impact that it has on your emotional and mental state. Make sure that you can keep your thoughts organized and your mind and energies on what you need to do in order to have success. If you aren’t able to do that at a certain point in time, step away until you can. It will be good for you and good for your bankroll.
